CEAPP: Overview and General Information

Note: The website works best with Google Chrome browser. If the video playing or transcript scrolling seem jumpy, try clearing your browser cache. To do that (in Chrome as an example), click the three dot button in the top right corner, choose "more tools" then "clear browsing data", which allows you to clear your cached images and files in the browser.

Produced by the Center for English Language Research and Teaching (CRELLT), which is housed in the College of the Liberal Arts and affiliated with the Department of Applied Linguistics, the Corpus of English for Academic and Professional Purposes (CEAPP) functions as a digital repository that provides browse and search capabilities for advancing the department's established scholarly focus on the teaching and learning of ESL, and the training of international teaching assistants.

In the Browse tab you will  find the videos in our corpus organized by subject. For more detailed descriptions of the teaching contexts, click a subject. Within each subject area, you will find the course name, the date that the video was recorded, and individual video files. Depending on the length of the class session, the videos are divided into a number of segments (Naming Protocol).

In the transcript and video viewing page, there are a few things to notice:

  1. The videos are transcribed using CLAN Conventions
  2. For optimal display of the sound waves, the default volume of the videos is adjusted when uploading the videos.
  3. For a quicker loading speed, disable the soundwave function.
  4. When you click on a line in the transcript, it will take you to the corresponding time in the video.
  5. When you highlight a section of the transcript, you can loop the video by clicking . You can also copy the highlighted section by clicking  (this functionality is only available for Researcher Users).
  6. To see the tags that the research team created, click Tiers. Note that the line numbers will change if you enable this function as the tiers take separate lines.

Under the Actions and Practices tab, you will find four categories of practices that the CEAPP team has identified for research and teaching  purposes. Click here to see the tagging protocol. Under the Search tab, you can search for any combination of words or symbols (following CLAN conventions) in the transcripts and also filter the search results. For example, if you want to see interactions that contain laughter in classroom, simply search for "&". For the list of transcription symbols we use, click here or click "more" under the search bar.

The Tutorials tab is under construction. Currently, it contains the manual of the website. In addition, if you want to contact the research team, click People which will link you to the CRELLT contact page.
